Fort Vuren

The fort near Vuren was build in 1844 as a simple fort of wood and clay.
It was with the castle ' Loevestein ' a defense line to protect the west for incoming enemies.

Between 1847-1849 this simple fort was rebuild to a Towerfort with three floors. The tower was build to protect against bombs and around the tower they made a moat. The tower could only be reached by a  drawbridge.

Between 1873-1879 was the next renovation. The topfloor was removed because it was to vulnerable for  enemy attacks. In the  northerly part of the fort they build a bombfree barrack.

The castle is very famous in Holland because of the spectacular escape of 'Hugo de Groot' in a bookbox.

The castle is open for the public. There are tours in the castle under supervision of a guide.
